This is the case, even if the person you care for has refused an assessment or services or does not have eligible needs that can be met through social care.<\/p>\n<p>The assessment looks at how caring affects your life \u2013 physically, mentally and emotionally. It will also consider what you want to achieve and whether you are able, or willing, to carry on with your caring role.<\/p>\n<h3>How to get an assessment<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccarers.org\/\">Durham County Carers Support<\/a> will carry out an initial assessment and can refer you to the council if they are unable to provide you with the advice and support to meet your needs. Young adult carers have told us they often need help through key times of change, such as going to college, leaving for university, or accessing the workplace. Often young adult carers worry about who will pick up the caring responsibilities for their family member when they are at work, studying or no longer living in the family home.<\/p>\n<p>We must involve you and anybody else you request in your assessment, to identify the level of caring and how this is impacting on your life, including any barriers that are stopping you from accessing further education or employment opportunities due to your caring role.<\/p>\n<h2>How to get an assessment<\/h2>\n<p>You can request an assessment, or one can be requested on your behalf, for example by a teacher or tutor by contacting <a href=\"https:\/\/family-action.org.uk\/services\/the-bridge-young-carers-young-adult-carers-service\/\">Family Action - The Bridge Young Carers Service<\/a> on 0191 383 2520 or <a href=\"mailto:durhamyoungcarers@family-action.org.uk\">durhamyoungcarers@family-action.org.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, if you are aged 18-24 you can also access help and support from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccarers.org\/\">Durham County Carers Support<\/a> who can carry out an initial assessment and can refer you to the council if they are unable to provide you with the advice and support to meet your needs.<\/p>\n<p>You can also make a self-referral to Durham County Council by contacting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.durham.gov.uk\/socialcaredirect\">Social Care Direct<\/a>. It will look at why you are a carer and consider what needs to change to make sure you don\u2019t have to carry out too many, or inappropriate, caring activities which could impact on your welfare, education, or social development. These may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal care, for example bathing and toileting.<\/li>\n<li>Strenuous physical tasks, such as lifting.<\/li>\n<li>Giving medication.<\/li>\n<li>Looking after the family finances.<\/li>\n<li>Providing emotional support to the adult you care for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to get an assessment<\/h3>\n<p>You can request an assessment, or one can be requested on your behalf, for example by a teacher.
